Witsieshoek is about 4 hours from Johannesburg, Durban or Bloemfontein. The road is well signposted and straightforward – with one important exception.

GPS warning — read this first

Some GPS and mapping applications offer a route to Witsieshoek via Royal Natal National Park. That route does not exist. Do not follow it. The correct route goes through Phuthaditjhaba. If your GPS is not routing through Phuthaditjhaba, override it.

The road to Witsieshoek

From Johannesburg
≈ 345km · 4 hours

N3 south-east to Harrismith. Exit 29 onto the N5/R74 toward Phuthaditjhaba. After 4.5km, turn left onto the R74 (R712). After 28.9km, take the ramp onto the R57 toward Phuthaditjhaba. Follow the R57 for 29.8km through town. Take the left fork to Witsieshoek.

From Durban
≈ 370km · 4 hours

N3 north-west to Harrismith. Exit 29 onto the N5. After 4.5km, turn left onto the R74 (R712) toward Phuthaditjhaba. After 28.9km, ramp onto the R57. Follow it 29.8km through town. Take the left fork to Witsieshoek.

From Bloemfontein
≈ 348km · 5 hours

R712 toward Golden Gate and Phuthaditjhaba. 49km from Clarens, turn right onto the R57. Follow it 29.8km through town. Take the left fork to Witsieshoek.

R712 out of Clarens toward Phuthaditjhaba. After 49km turn right onto the R57. Follow it 29.8km through town. Take the left fork to Witsieshoek.

Toll gate fee

You will enter the Sentinel Peak Park through a toll gate. The conservation fee is payable here if you are arriving by vehicle.

– Adults: R90 per person
– Children under 12: R50 per person

Conference delegates are not charged conservation fees. Day visitors and overnight guests arriving on foot from other trails are not charged this fee.

Shuttle

The final kilometres of the road from the Lodge to the Sentinel Peak Car Park require a 4×4. If you do not have one, book the shuttle.

The shuttle runs between Witsieshoek Mountain Lodge and the Sentinel Peak Car Park. It does not run from the toll gate.
